Project overview

A construction manager near Eugene, Oregon, required a brownfield installation of a new log-processing line within an active sawmill. The complete scope extended from the concrete foundations through the building structure. Regional seismic requirements meant the installation area depended on earthquake-rated pilings, making the civil foundation one of the project's most time-intensive phases. Omineca Industrial served as general contractor for the installation. Its scope included a stem infeed system, triple-ring debarker, merchandiser, structural steel, and building envelope. The work took place around a functioning log yard and operating mill equipment, requiring coordination among Omineca's crews, specialist subcontractors, equipment deliveries, and continuing engineering changes.

Executing a brownfield installation

Unlike a greenfield site, this project required construction within a functioning industrial environment. Omineca worked around an active log yard and running sawmill, coordinating construction without taking control of the entire site. The team also adapted to changing engineering information and equipment delivery schedules while protecting the project's critical path.

Precision equipment alignment

The triple-ring debarker was installed directly on raw steel without shimming. The merchandiser also required minimal-to-no shimming. The construction manager attributed the result to the team's experience repairing and installing equipment in operating sawmills.

A 767-day safety record

Omineca completed 767 days on the project without a recordable safety incident. The account credits leadership, foremen, and workforce-wide expectations for maintaining that record throughout work in an active industrial environment.
