How Mills Choose Scanning & Optimization Systems

Scanning and optimization is usually the highest-ROI upgrade available to an existing mill: recovering even 1–2% more fiber from the same log supply flows straight to the bottom line. But the buying process is opaque — most mills only make this decision once a decade, while vendors quote it every week. This guide covers how experienced operators structure the evaluation.

Start with your recovery baseline, not the technology

Before talking to any vendor, establish your current lumber recovery factor and grade yield by product line. Optimization vendors will model projected recovery gains against your own numbers — if you don't have a baseline, you can't hold the projection accountable after startup. Most mills pull six months of production data and have their sawfiler and QC lead validate it.

Understand what's actually being scanned

Log-side scanning (bucking and primary breakdown) and lumber-side scanning (edger, trimmer, grader) are different investments with different payback profiles. Log-side systems drive volume recovery; lumber-side systems drive grade recovery. Vendors like Autolog and USNR offer both, but the sensors, software, and integration effort differ substantially between the two.

Ask about integration before accuracy

Every modern scanner is accurate enough. The projects that go sideways fail on integration: PLC handshakes with thirty-year-old carriage drives, mechanical positioning that can't act on what the optimizer decides, and mill networks that can't move the data. Ask each vendor how many installations they've done against your specific machine centers, and talk to those mills.

Plan the startup window realistically

A scanner retrofit typically needs a planned outage for mechanical installation plus several weeks of tuning while the optimizer learns your log diet. Budget for a vendor technician on-site during ramp-up, and get the tuning support commitment in the contract — recovery gains arrive during tuning, not at commissioning.
